Week 8 Science Activities

This week, I want you to practice identifying and writing testable questions. Knowing how to write and identify variables will help you come up with an excellent Science Fair Project next year!

Part I: For each scenario, identify the independent variables (changing), the dependent variables (measurable) and the control variables (stay the same):

1. Does the quantity of sunlight affect the amount of tomatoes a tomato plant will produce?

2. Will the weight of the paper affect how the distance a paper airplane travels?

3. Does the type of shoe affect how fast I run in 20 seconds?

4. You decide to clean your bathroom. You want to start with the shower because there appears to be a green substance in it. You decide to clean the green sludge by adding lemonade. You clean one side of the shower using lemonade and the other side by using water. After 3 days of soaking of equal quantities each day, there is no change in appearance of the green sludge on either side of the shower.

Identify the independent, dependent and control variables for this situation.

5. You want to test what size of soccer ball is the easiest to juggle with your body. You test soccer balls varying in sizes, 3, 4 & 5. You measure the time the ball stays in the air after each try. You can use your feets, head and knees to juggle the ball.

Identify the independent, dependent and control variables for this situation.

Part II: Write two of your own testable questions and identify the variables.

Part III: Find the dependent & indendent variables in these questions. Warning...some are not testable!

Week 7 Math Work

This week I am attaching two different types of activities. The first is a review of plotting and naming coordinates in all four coordinates. The second is designing and calculating the cost of building your own playground.

I am putting the answers for the coordinates activity so you can check them once you are done. The answers for the playground activity will vary based on what you choose to build.

For the playground activity, if you can't open a Word document I have also attached it as a PDF, so you will be able to open one for sure! Have a great week!

Week 7 Activities

Hello everyone, this week I am attaching two different activities for you to try using things you have at home. The first one is a building challenge with newspaper or flyers. I actually have done this one in the past as a challenge in class with the students in teams and they sure were competitive. You can use weekly flyers you have or any type of paper, get out some duct tape or any type of sturdy tape and have fun!         Newspaper building.PNGNewspaper building.PNG

The second activity is definitely a trial and error type activity so don't get discouraged, it will probably take you multiple tries! Also anyone in your family could try this and your could challenge them to see how many tries it takes them to do! If you don't have chalk to do it outside you can most definitely try with a pencil and paper.

Have a great week everyone and enjoy the nice weather!

Week 6 Math work

Hello  everyone, please find attached below a mental math practice and a multi-step question involving decimals. This is a real life problem that if you were to go on a trip you would need to think about in advance. I would like you to do your calculations with out a calculator, but if you are struggling then please go ahead and use one. Just make sure to show your work so you can see your thought process.

I hope everyone is enjoying the nicer weather, if you have a question please email me: bethanie.mcshane@nbed.nb.ca

Week 5 Math Practice

Hello everyone, we are on week 5 of home learning already, half way until summer break! This week you will be reviewing writing expressions and solving equations, operations with money, and three mental math practices. I am also putting the answers to the math sheets so that you or your parent can check your work when you are done or to see if you are on the right track.

Also, if you find the grade 8 practice too hard or can't get it you can always click on 7 Math and do the work that I have there, which should be no problem for you!

As always if you have any questions or support please do not hesistate to email me at bethanie.mcshane@nbed.nb.ca

Have a great week everyone, the weather is getting nicer!
